Summer 2021
Those in power can kill one, two, or three roses, but they will never be able to stop the coming of spring.”- Lula da Silva
“RIOTS” is a photobook documenting the uprisings for racial justice during the summer and fall of 2020 in Washington, D.C.
The title “Riots” is used ironically, as these peaceful protests were often made violent through police intervention.
The photos were taken by Katelyn King.
The books cover is a textured card stock that wears easily to the touch. The idea was to evoke the sensation of pavement and asphalt.
The project included a wheat pasting campaign that featured photos from the book and marching chants to call back to a summer we all collectively held our breath.
To launch the book officially we hosted a BBQ in Malcom X Park, where we ate, danced, and remembered.
